Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The determination of the melting / boiling point was carried out (EU mehtod A1 /OECD 102) by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under nitrogen in a standard aluminium crucible at a heating rate of 10 K/min. For confirmatory purposes the capillary method was additionally carried out.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
250 °C

Additional information

The measurement in an aluminium crucible with an aperture showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range 145-175 °C, and an exothermal effect in the range 200-345 °C.

During the endothermic effect only a change of colour (yellowish) of the test substance was observed, but it retained its crystalline powder character. It was concluded that the endothermic effect is caused by an endothermic transformation process and not by melting of the test substance.

The capillary methdod was carried out for confirmatory purposes. The test showed the decomposition of the test substance by exothermal reaction at about 250 °C by changing the colour of the test item.

Based on these findings a melting point of potassium sorbate does not exist at atmospheric pressure.
