Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Sorbic acid does not contain any structural groups known to be correlated with a tendency to react exothermally with combustible material. In addition, the thermodynamic calculations and the negative oxygen balance (<-200 %) for sorbic acid indicate that the substance may rather be assessed as combustible than to have oxidising properties. In conclusion, structural aspects and estimated thermodynamic properties indicate that sorbic acid must not be considered to have oxidizing properties.
The model calculation was conducted for sorbic acid, since sorbic acid is the corresponding acid to potassium sorbate, extrapolation of the obtained results is not considered to be restricted.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Based on the chemical structure of potassium sorbate, oxidising properties are not expected.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the chemical structure and according to the criteria for classification and labeling set out in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 the test item has no oxidising properties.
