Methyl-N- [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]carbamate (CAS 23432-62-4) exhibits a low vapour pressure and low volatility, indicating that the substance does not tend to evaporate from the water surface. Therefore, photodegradation in air is not a main degradation pathway. Nevertheless, if emitted into the air, methyl-N- [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]carbamate (CAS 23432-62-4) will be rapidly photodegraded (estimated half-life of 0.94 days for indirect photodegradation, OH-radicals). Once released into the water phase, hydrolysis contributes significantly to the degradation of this substance. The substance has a two-step hydrolysis. The rate of formation of the first hydrolysis product, methyl-N-[3 (trihydroxysilyl)propyl]carbamate is relatively fast (half-life 3 h at room temperature and pH 7). However, the rate of formation of the ultimate hydrolysis products, (3 aminopropyl)silanetriol plus methanol and CO2, is extremely slow. Hydrolysis rates (half-life, 25° C, pH 7) of carbamates is reported to vary from a few seconds to 105 years; for a primary carbamate with two alkyl substituents (as is the case for this substance), the rate is likely to be towards the upper end of this range. Methyl-N- [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]carbamate (CAS 23432-62-4) and its silanol hydrolysis product exhibit a low potential for adsorption considering the low log Kow values (< 3).
