Remarks on result:
other: The combustion of the substance mixture (test item / cellulose - ratio 2/1) burned immediately in contact with the wire and the combustion developed through the entire mixture in 9.5 seconds and produced an active white flame.

The burning rate of the test mixture was higher compared to the burning rate of the reference mixture. The substance is thus concluded to have oxidising properties.

As the results of the preliminary test were conclusive, a main study was not performed.

As the mean burning time of the sample-to-cellulose ratio 4:1 or 1:1 was less than the mean burning time of a 2:3 mixture (by mass) of potassium bromate and cellulose, cerium ammonium nitrate is considered as oxidising.

Cerium ammonium nitrate was concluded to be an oxidising solid (packing group II) following data reported in the UN Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods, Manual of tests and criteria.

Additional information

Cerium ammonium nitrate is mentioned in section 34.4.1 of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria to be an oxidising solid, Packing Group II.

In a supporting study performed under GLP and according to test method EC A.17 (Vibert, 2008), the substance was concluded to have oxidising properties. As the EC A.17 test does not distinguish between a category 1, 2 or 3 oxidising solid as required for CLP, the UN data are taken as the key information.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on data on cerium ammonium nitrate as reported in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, this substance is concluded to be a category 2 oxidising solid according to CLP Regulation and H272 is assigned. Experimental data in accordance with the EC A.17 test confirm that the substance has oxidising properties but do not distinguish between a category 1, 2 or 3 oxidising solid.
