Test procedure:

Moisture (wt %):

Remarks on result:
other: burning rate
Remarks:
burning rate is approximately 3 cm / 5 min

The sample was tested as received. It was not dried, milled or sieved.

The particle size distribution of the original sample was determined by means of a laser diffraction analysis. The median size (d50) of the original sample is 186 μm.

The moisture content of the powder was measured by means of a halogen moisture balance (temperature = 105°C, stop criterion = 2 digits/60s, sensitivity = 1 mg, initial sample = 1.5 g, resolution moisture content = 0.1%).

Remark: volatile components which are liberated at or below the set temperature of the moisture balance are included in the moisture content.

The moisture content of the sample was 1.8 %.

Burning behaviour (combustion class)

Test at room temperature (20°C)

The sample Ferbam 76WG “original fraction” belongs to combustion class 4 (glowing without sparks or slow decomposition without flame) .

When a glowing Pt-wire of approximately 1000°C or a flame of a gas burner is applied, ignition with flame and smouldering of the whole powder layer is observed (combustion class 4). The burning rate is approximately 3 cm/5min.

Smoulder temperature – 15 mm layer – Ferbam (< 200 μm)

The smoulder temperature or minimum layer ignition temperature (MLIT) of Ferbam is 190°C for a layer with a thickness of 15 mm. The results of the tests are given in the following table:

surface temperature (° C)  test result (max. temperature)  time to ignition or to reach the highest layer value of temperature without ignition (min)
 300  Ignition (512 °C)  21
 260  Ignition (510 °C)  40
 200  Ignition (> 450 °C)  120
 190  Ignition (> 405 °C)  337
 180  No ignition (158 °C)  52
 180  No ignition (160 °C)  44
 180  No ignition (160 °C)  73

The following observations were made at a temperature of 190°C:

• Glowing or smouldering can be observed.

• The maximum temperature in the dust layer (> 450°C) is higher than the plate temperature (190°C).

• The fumes that are produced could be ignited by means of an external ignition source (gas flame).

The dust layer consisted of 57.7 g of sample. The ambient temperature was 20 ºC.

Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met

Executive summary:

The flammability test for Ferbam was conducted according to DIN VDI 2263 Blatt 1, 1.2.5 and to EN 50281 -2 -1.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the EU-GHS-criteria the substance is not flammable because burning rate is with approximately 5cm/5min > than limitvalue of 2mm/s stated in EU-GHS-regulation.
