Endpoint:
vapour pressure
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
December 07, 2017
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
other: ASTM D2879 - 97 (Standard Test Method for Vapor Pressure-Temperature Relationship and Initial Decomposition Temperature of Liquids by Isoteniscope)
Version / remarks:
2007
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
A digital electronic pressure gauge was used for pressure measurement instead of the mercury manometer stipulated
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The sample was well mixed before being placed in a borosilicate glass cell, which was then connected to a vacuum and pressure measurement system. The sample was cooled to minus 20 °C and subjected to slow evacuation in order to remove entrained air. Five cooling/evacuation procedures were carried out before the sample cell pressure was reduced to less than 0.1 mm Hg. Sample and measurement systems were placed in a water bath maintained at 20 °C and the pressure attained at equilibrium noted. Three measurements were made, using fresh sample for each test.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
isoteniscope

Conclusions:
The vapour pressure of 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate was found to be < 0.75 mm Hg at 20 °C.
Executive summary:

Vapour pressure was measured in an experiment for 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate according to ASTM D2879-97 (Standard Test Method for Vapor Pressure-Temperature Relationship and Initial Decomposition Temperature of Liquids by Isoteniscope). A minor deviation from the guideline was reported in which a digital electronic pressure gauge was used to establish pressure instead of a mercury manometer stipulated, however, this is not considered to have affected the overall result. An isoteniscope technique was employed and the pressure attained at equilibrium noted for each of three tests. The average vapour pressure for 2-butoxyethyl methacrylate was concluded to be < 0.75 mm Hg at a temperature of 20 °C, converted to < 0.99 hPa.

Description of key information

2-Butoxyethyl methacrylate was determined to have an average vapour pressure of < 0.75 mm Hg (< 0.99 hPa) at a temperature of 20 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Vapour pressure:
0.99 hPa
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The endpoint conclusion was taken from a key study carried out based on a guideline equivalent to ASTM D2879-97 (Standard Test Method for Vapor Pressure-Temperature Relationship and Initial Decomposition Temperature of Liquids by Isoteniscope). As a result of a minor deviation from the test protocol, a Klimisch score of 2 (reliable with restrictions) has been recommended. The deviation is considered not to have had an affect on the end result and the final vapour pressure value is acceptable for chemical safety assessment.
