Description of key information

There are no data for skin and eye irritation/corrosion. However, based on the fact that the substance is a chlorosilane, so generates hydrogen chloride in the presence of moisture, it is expected to be corrosive. Therefore, in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annexes VII and VIII, the in vitro and in vivo skin and eye irritation studies (required in Sections 8.1, 8.1.1, 8.2 and 8.2.1) do not need to be conducted as the available information indicates that the substance meets the criteria for classification as corrosive to skin.

Additional information

Hexachlorodisilane hydrolyses rapidly (half-life <1 minute at pH 7) in contact with water and moist air, releasing hydrogen chloride (HCl). Although no in vitro or in vivo irritation/corrosion studies are available, severe skin, eye and respiratory damage can be expected due to release of HCl. This is consistent with reliable measured data for other chlorosilanes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on available data hexachlorodisilane requires classification as Skin Corrosion Cat. 1A, H314: causes severe skin burns and eye damage according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. It is assumed that substances that are corrosive to the skin are also damaging to the eyes, so there is no separate labelling for the eyes. There are no specific data for respiratory irritation, however, due to the predicted corrosivity the hazard statement 'EUH071 Corrosive to the respiratory tract' applies.
