Description of key information

The flammability of tantalum carbide was tested according to Regulation 440/2008/EC Method A.10 and the substance was not considered as highly flammable. Additionally, a study was performed equivalent to EU method A.12. The reaction of the test substance tantalum carbide with water did not result in the evolution of gas. Consequently, tantalum carbide has to be considered as non hazardous.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The flammability of tantalum carbide was tested according to Regulation 440/2008/EC Method A.10. In a preliminary screening test, the test substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long, 20 mm wide and 10 mm high. The flame of a gas burner was applied. Ignition occurred and combustion propagated along 200 mm within 2520 s.

Since combustion propagated along 200 mm in more than 4 minutes the test substance has not to be considered as highly flammable and no further testing was required.

Additionally, a study was performed equivalent to EU method A.12. The reaction of the test substance tantalum carbide with water did not result in the evolution of gas. Consequently, tantalum carbide has to be considered as non hazardous.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Since the combustion time of the test substance exceeds 10 minutes tantalum carbide is not classified as flammable solid in accordance with Section 2.7.2.3., Annex I of Regulation 1272/2008/EC and Section 33.2. of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (5threvised ed.).
