Description of key information

Decomposition energy is below  the limit of 500 kJ/kg given in the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, Chapter 2.1.4.3. (c).It can be excluded that the substance has explosive properties.

According to the chemical structure and the list of reactive groups that could have explosive properties (Bretherick’s Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards, Butterworths, 4th edition) it cannot be excluded that monochloramine has explosive properties.

Thus, thermal stability of two monochloramine solutions (at 7.2 g/L and at ca. 31 g/L) was determined by differential thermal analysis Calvet Calorimetry method (performed according to a standardised guideline).

In both studies decomposition energy is below the limit of 500 kJ/kg given in the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, Chapter 2.1.4.3. (c). Thus, it can be excluded that the tested substance has explosive properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In both studies, decomposition energy is below the limit of 500 kJ/kg given in the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, Chapter 2.1.4.3. (c). Thus, the substance is not classified for explosive properties.
