Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Upon contact with water lithium sulfate hydrolyses and lithium hydroxide and sulfate are formed. PNECs were derived from most sensitive species of each compartment/ endpoint and values for Li2SO4 and lithium ion were shown.

Derivation of PNECs for Li2SO4

For Li2SO4 the PNECs derived for lithium were corrected as follows:

PNEC (Li2SO4) = PNEC (Li) x (M(Li2SO4) / (M(Li))

The molecular weight for Li2SO4 is 109.95 g/mol.

The atomic weight for Li is ca. 6.94 g/mol, and should be multiplied where > 1 Li molecule is present.

PNEC (Li2SO4) = PNEC (Li) x (109.95 / [2*6.94])

The updated PNECs for sediment and soil have not yet been integrated in the risk assessment calculation. An update of the CSR is planned for November 2020.

Conclusion on classification

Classification for Lithium sulfate and its monohydrate

Based on the available data lithium sulfate and its monohydrate have not to be classified according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) and according to Directive 67/548/EC (DSD) criteria as the acute (LC50/ ErC50) and chronic toxicity (ECx/ NOEC) are > 1 mg/L.

Overview of results used for Classification and Labelling:

Data based on read-across for Li2SO4, Li2SO4*H2O

Acute toxicity: Fish LC50 = 45 mg/L, 52 mg/L (read-across from Li2CO3)

Chronic toxicity: Fish NOEC = 22.73 mg/L, 26.45 (read-across from LiOH*H2O)

Acute toxicity: Daphnia EC50 = 49 mg/L, 57 mg/L (read-across from Li2CO3)

Chronic toxicity: Daphnia NOEC = 13.5 mg/L, 15.7 mg/L (read-across from Li

Algae ErC50 > 596 mg/L,> 692 mg/L (read-across from Li2CO3)

Algae NOEC > = 75 mg/L, 87 mg/L (read-across from Li2CO3)

Activated sludge EC10 = 182 mg/L, 212 mg/L; EC50 = 415 mg/L, 483 mg/L (read-across from LiOH)
