Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
04 September 2012 to 13 November 2012
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Preliminary test:

In a first trial the test item dissolved in its hydration water, and bubbles evolved from the sample but no propagation of the flame was observed. This was repeated in a second trial showing identical results. No main test was performed.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The substance was concluded from United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Test N.1 not to be flammable in contact with a flame (not classified as a Division 4.1 flammable solid).

Description of key information

Following a GLP study in accordance with United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria - Fifth revised edition (2010) - Test N.1 (Part III, Section 33.2.1.4) yttrium trinitrate is concluded not to be readily combustible (Demangel, 2012; Klimisch 1). From day-to-day handling and use of the substance, yttrium trinitrate is concluded not to have pyrophoric or self-heating properties nor to be flammable in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Pyrophoricity:

In the daily use and handling of yttrium trinitrate during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that yttrium trinitrate has pyrophoric properties.

Flammability on contact with water:

Under conditions where yttrium trinitrate is in contact with water no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that yttrium trinitrate is flammable in contact with water.

Flammability:

From a flammability test (United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria - Fifth revised edition (2010) - Test N.1 (Part III, Section 33.2.1.4)) yttrium trinitrate is concluded not to be readily combustible (Demangel, 2012). This results in an absence of classification under the CLP Regulation.

Self-heating:

Based on the results of the autoflammability test performed according to the EC A.16 test guideline (Demangel, 2012), yttrium trinitrate can safely be concluded not to exhibit self-heating properties.
