Study conducted to basic scientific principles. Read-across from MnSO4 to MnCl2 is considered scientifically valid, as the anions are not expected to exhibit different ecotoxicity and in both cases the cation Mn2+ is common to both substances and both substances are very soluble in water.

Two sets of eyed rainbow trout eggs were used for testing, one set were acclimatised to manganese from the egg stage and one unacclimatised set.
Fish eggs were exposed to concentrations of the test material delivered via proportional diluted at a rate of two litres of test solution per cycle.

Under similar conditions, unexposed fish eggs were exposed to the same water conditions except no MnSO4 added.

Conclusions:
The study showed an increased tolerance of rainbow trout eggs chronically exposed to Mn2+ compared to unexposed eggs. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was 0.60 mg Mn/L in soft water.
