- Purpose
The purpose of this assay was to identify the aquatic toxicity potential of potassium bromate in Daphnia magna to provide a rational basis for hazard estimation for the test item in aquatic environments
Study Design
For this purpose, juvenile daphnids were exposed to an aqueous test material solution over 48 hours, under defined conditions. The study comprised of four test vessels per concentration and control group containing five daphnids each, i.e. 20 daphnids per concentration (test medium group) and control group.
Daphnids were exposed to a nominal test material concentration of 100 mg/L (limit test) in an open static system.
Results
The limit of quantification of the analytical method was 0.07 mg/L. The analytical recovery was 100 and 99 % after 0 and 48 hours, respectively. The mean recovery over 48 hours was 99.5 %. During the experimental phase of the study, the test material concentration could be maintained at ≥ 80 % of the initial concentration. The test was performed as a static test in open vessels.
As the stability of the test material in the aqueous solution was ≥ 80 % of the nominal concentration, the EC50 values were calculated with the nominal concentrations. Nominal, corresponding mean analytical concentrations, and number of immobilized daphnids are given in the following table.

Immobilization was observed in one daphnia exposed to 100 mg/L after 48 hours.
For the test material, the following nominal EC50 values for daphnids were determined:
24 h EC50 > 100 mg/L
48 h EC50 > 100 mg/L
Conclusion
Under the given experimental conditions, the test material showed a 24 h and 48 h EC50 value > 100 mg/L nominally.
An aqueous solution of nominal 100 mg/L of potassium bromate revealed no aquatic toxicity in the test system.
