Description of key information

No toxic effect of sodium hypophosphite (monohydrate) was observed to Daphnia magna in the static limit test (nominal concentration 100 mg/L) performed according to the OECD guideline 202 and the EU Method C.2. 
Hence EC0 (48h) is equal to or greater than 100 mg/L and the EC50 (48h) is greater than 100 mg/L.

In a 48h immobilization test according to the OECD guideline 202 and the EU Method C.2 the acute toxicity of sodium hypophosphite (monohydrate) to Daphnia magna was investigated. Based on a range finding study a limit test was performed with nominal concentration 100 mg/L.

Daphnids were exposed to the test substance and a negative control was included. Total exposure duration was 48h and after 24h and 48h immobility was checked. Samples were taken to confirm the concentration of the test substance in the test medium.

The test substance concentration was stable during the testing period and no toxic effect could be observed. Hence, the NOEC (48h) and the EC0 (48h) is equal to or greater than 100 mg/L and the EC50 (48h) is greater than 100 mg/L.

Based on the results of this study, sodium hypophosphite would be classified non-hazardous to Daphnia magna according to the CLP regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.
