Description of key information

In accordance with Annex XI, 1.2 and 1.5, of REACH Regulation 1907/2006 the study requirement is waived based on the natural abundance of silica and silicates as minerals in soil.

Plants may take up silica in form of silicic acid, which is the bioavailable form of silica. In plants, monomeric silicic acid may polymerize and form amorphous silica particles through condensation reactions. Amorphous silica accumulates in rice, millet, sugarcane, and wheat plants (Rabovsky 1995, as cited in ATSDR draft document on silica, 2017).

Increased germination rates and reduced time to germination have been reported in various plant species after treatment of seeds with nano-sized silica. Only at very high doses, pH effects and/or adsorption of macro- and micronutrients may lead to phytotoxic effects.
