Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Long-term industrial experience in handling shows that this property is strongly related to the particle size. Furthermore, the presented values demonstrate that the self-ignition temperature can also vary depending on the surrounding conditions (moisture, type of atmosphere, etc.). In steam the self-ignition temperature is approximately 470 deg. C, whereas in a nitrogen atmosphere the value is as high as 910 deg. C. For calcium chips the self-ignition temperature is between 730-750 deg. C (1.0-1.8mm) and 765-770 deg. C (4.0mm) for different sizes, respectively. These values were obtained from the following handbook: Baratov, A.N., Korolchenko, A.Y., Kravchuk, G.N. Eds. (1990). Fire and Explosion Hazard of Substances and Materials and Extinguishing Means (published in Russian), Moscow Chemistry, Russian Federation.
