Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The solubility of Hf depends on the chemistry of the medium which will lead to chemical reactions (hydrolysis, complexation), in particular the pH value and the species present in the solution.
A Transformation/Dissolution test was conducted following OECD guideline 29 and gives a water solubility of hafnium < 0.012 mg/L

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
0.012 mg/L
at the temperature of:
22 °C

Additional information

Several independent sources of information indicate that hafnium is insoluble.

The solubility of Hf depends on the chemistry of the medium which will lead to chemical reactions (hydrolysis, complexation), in particular the pH value and the species present in the solution.

A Transformation/Dissolution test was conducted following OECD guideline 29 ( Guidance Document on Transformation/Dissolution of Metals and Metal Compounds in Aqueous Media)

In the 24 h screening dissolution test, quantitatively measurable hafnium was not observed in the dissolution media of pH6 -7-8. (<0.012 mg/L). These results show that there is no appreciable hafnium dissolution/transformation in these media.

Based on these results, the long term dissolution tests (7 and 28 days) were not performed.

The solubility of Hf in the absence of complexant is < 0.012 mg/L
