Fire-fighting measures

In case of fire: Use Class D dry powder or sand to extinguish. Do not use water, carbon dioxide or halogenated extinguishers.Specific Hazards Arising from the Material: Material readily reacts with water generating flammable hydrogen gas. May emit toxic fumes under fire conditions.Special Protective Equipment and Precautions for Firefighters: Full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Barium metal can reignite after fire is initially extinguished. Never leave extinguished fire unattended.

Accidental release measures

Wear protective gloves / protective clothing / eye protection / face protection. Do not breathe dust / fumes /gas /mist/ vapours /spray.Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Methods and Materials for Containment and Cleaning Up: Sweep or scoop spilled product and place in a closed container for further handling and disposal. Do not use water for spill clean-up. Cover very small quantities in the open with powdered limestone and let decompose. Use only non-sparking tools and natural bristle brushes.Environmental Precautions: Do not flush to sewer, stream, or other bodies of water. Do not allow to enter drains or to be released to the environment.

Handling and storage

Precautions for Safe Handling: Store in a dry place. Store in a closed container under argon or mineral oil. Store locked up.Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sprarks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking. Handle under inert gas. protect from moisture. Do not breathe dust / fumes / gas / mist / vapours / spray.Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. See section 8 for information on personal protection equipment.Conditions for Safe Storage, Including Any Incompatibilities: Do not store together with acids or oxidizers. Whenever possible the use of local exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls is the preferred method of controlling exposure to airborne dust and fume to meet established occupational exposure limits. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wash thoroughly after handling and before eating or smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Prepare for the possibility of a fire. Keep extinguishing agents, tools for handling and protective clothing readily available. Please refer to the exposure scenarios for RMMs (chapter 13)

Stability and reactivity

Stable under recommended storage conditions.Reacts readily with water releasing flammable hydrogen gas. Conditions to Avoid: Avoid contact with water or moist air and possible ignition sources such as sparks or flame. Incompatible Materials: Water or moisture, oxidizing agents, oxygen, acids, alcohols, halocarbons, carbon dioxide, ammonia. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Barium hydroxides, barium oxides, hydrogen gas.

Disposal considerations

Disposal in accordance with local, regional, national and international regulations. Dispose of wastes in an approved waste disposal facility.Packaging treatment: Containers that cannot be cleaned must be treated as waste or must be incinerated in a suitable incineration plant holding a permit delivered by the competent authorities.
