Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Pentane-1,2-diol is readily biodegradable, failing the 10-d window.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable but failing 10-day window

Additional information

There is one test report on readily biodegradability (OECD 301E) of pentane-1,2 -diol (CAS 5343 -92 -0) available revealing a biodegradation rate of >70% within 28 d [Ciba-Geigy Ltd. 1982]. To support these finding, an analogy approach to hexane-1,6-diol (CAS 629 -11 -8) is applied. This test was conducted according to OECD guideline 301C using municipal activated sludge. After 28 days a DOC removal of 98% and a biological oxygen demand of 95% (BOD/ThOD) was measured [OECD SIDS 2000].

Furthermore, there is one study report according to OECD 302 for Inherent Biodegradability revealing an DOC elemination rate of 95% after 8 d [BASF 1986].
