Portions of the test item were brought in by means of a syringe. The time-lag between application and ignition was measured for all tests. After each application of the test item, the test vessel was flushed completely with clean air to be sure to have a clean test vessel after each test. After flushing, a sufficient interval of time was allowed to ensure that the flask temperature is stabilised at the desired test temperature before the next sample was brought in.

In test 1, starting at 460 °C, the temperature was decreased in steps of 5 °C. If no ignition took place any more, although the amount of the injected test item was increased to a maximum of 20 drops, the trials were continued at a temperature 2 °C below the last positive ignition trial. Before the performance of test 2 (starting at 400°C) and test 3 (starting at 410 °C) a new test vessel was used to avoid contamination and systematic errors. The procedure of both tests was similar to test 1.

The measured lowest ignition temperatures of the main test are > 300 °C and do not differ by more than 20 °C, thus the test is satisfactory.

The auto-ignition temperature is defined as the lowest temperature of all single results of the main test, but rounded to multiples of 5 °C.
