Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
water solubility
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is hydrolytically unstable at pH 4, 7 and 9 (half-life less than 12 hours)
Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
other: handbook
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
not known
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: A number of the references are regarded as reliable secondary sources by OECD or within the REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment.
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
no data. Information from reliable handbook sources
GLP compliance:
not specified
Remarks:
Information from reliable handbook sources
Type of method:
other: no data. Information from reliable handbook sources
Water solubility:
789 g/L
Temp.:
20 °C
pH:
7
Details on results:
Miscible/completely soluble.

Temperature and pH nominal values - not quoted in data sources. Value quoted for solubility is a nominal value equivalent to the density to represent full miscibility with water. Described as infinite solubility of ethanol in water and water in ethanol.

Conclusions:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): miscible
Substance is fully miscible in water in all proportions
Executive summary:

A large number of reliable handbook sources consistently report that ethanol is fully miscible in water.

Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
other: handbook source
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
not known
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Secondary source (handbook) that is widely regarded as reliable. Origin of data is cited.
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
no data. Information from reliable handbook source
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
other: no data. Information from reliable handbook source
Water solubility:
ca. 789 000 mg/L
Temp.:
25 °C
pH:
7
Details on results:
Figure shown represents density of substance and a 'nominal' value for complete solubility.
pKa: 16 at 25 °C is cited.
Conclusions:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): miscible
Ethanol is fully water miscible in water.
Executive summary:

A reliable secondary source reports that ethanol is fully miscible in water in all proportions.

Description of key information

Magnesium ethanolate is hydrolytically unstable at pH 4, 7, and 9 and the halfe-life is approx. 1 minute, therefore the endpoint is waived for Magnesium ethanolate.

The hydrolysis product ethanol is completely miscible in water at 20°C (water solubility 789 g/l) . The hydrolysis product magnesium hydroxide is poorly soluble at 20°C (water solubility ca 1.78 mg/l ).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
1.78 mg/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C
