Description of key information

One reliable study of long-term toxicity to terrestrial organisms is available: Dodd and Addison, 2010 studied survival and reproduction in Collembola species (springtails). For the most sensitive of 3 species tested, Onychiurus folsomi, a 35-day NOEC for reproduction was determined (in sandy loam soil with a low organic matter content: 1.14%): this NOEC is taken forward for use in assessment. All of the other NOECs determined in the same study (using the 3 springtail species in OECD 207 artificial soil, plus O. folsomi tested also in sandy loam and silt loam) were at least twice as high as the O. folsomi (sandy loam) NOEC cited here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for soil dwelling arthropods:
156 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

The OECD Collembola reproduction guideline 232 was not available when this study was performed, but the test method employed, including the artificial soil used, was closely similar to that later recommended in the guideline (and the Collembola species for which a NOEC of 156 mg/kg soil dw was determined proved more sensitive to MTBE than Folsomia candida, one of the species recommended in OECD 232).
