Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Short-term toxicity to fish

Currently viewing:

Administrative data

Endpoint:
short-term toxicity to fish
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is highly insoluble in water, hence indicating that aquatic toxicity is unlikely to occur
Cross-reference
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
other: According to Annex VIII, column 1 and 2, endpoint 9.1.3
Reference
Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility)
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.6 (Water Solubility)
Principles of method if other than guideline:

The water solubility of a substance can be considerably affected by the presence of impurities. This guideline addresses the determination of water solubility for essentially pure, nonvolatile and water-stable substances. This document described two methods, the column elution and the flask method, which cover a solubility threshold below 0.010 g/l and above 0.010 g/l respectively. A simple preliminary test is also described which allows to determine approximately the appropriate amount of sample to be used in the final test, as well as the time necessary to reach saturation. The substance (solids must be pulverized) is dissolved in water at the test temperature and under the conditions specified above. Subsequently. the mass concentration of the substance in the aqueous solution, which must not contain any undissolved particles, is determined by a suitable analytical method.
Type of method:
flask method
Water solubility:
> 0.03 - < 0.07 g/L
Temp.:
20 °C
pH:
ca. 8
Details on results:
The water solubility value found is so low that we can confirm the insolubility in water of pyrite cinders.
Conclusions:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): other: <0.05 g/L
The Pyrite cinders are constituted especially by iron oxides. The test confirmed the bibliography data that reporting that the iron oxides are insoluble at all the temperatures.
The result of the water solubility analysis may be due only to the presence of Calcium Solfate. The water solubility value found is so low that we can confirm the insolubility in water of pyrite cinders.
