Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2010 - 2011
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
Guideline compliant study with good documentation of the applied methods.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: UN test N.1
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

The sample could not be ignited. Only in presence of the ignition flame (gas burner) a glowing was observed but not a propagation of burning.

Iron sulfide is not highly flammable.

Interpretation of results:
non flammable
Remarks:
Migrated information
Conclusions:
FeS is not highly flammable.
Executive summary:

The flammability of iron sulfide was determined according to UN test N.1 which is similar to EC A.10 “Determination of the Flammability (Solids)". The sample could not be ignited. Only in presence of the ignition flame (gas burner) a glowing was observed but not a propagation of burning. Therefore, the test was stopped after the pre-test and FeS is considered to be not highly flammable.

The results of this test are considered to be relevant and reliable for the risk assessment.

Description of key information

FeS is not highly flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

In the Klimisch 1 key study from Paß (2011) the flammability of FeS was determined according to UN test N.1 which is similar to EC A.10 “Determination of the Flammability (Solids)".

Justification for classification or non-classification

FeS is not highly flammable. Therefore, classification is not needed.
