Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Lanthanum oxide was not flammable in a flammability study according to EU Method A.10

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Lanthanum oxide was not flammable in a flammability study according to EU Method A.10. Self ignition did not occur within two minutes of heating with a propane flame (minimum diameter 5 mm).

Pyrophoricity: The test substance was handled under normal laboratory conditions during all studies performed. This demonstrates that the test substance does not ignite in contact with air.

In conclusion, lanthanum oxide has no pyrophoric properties. Flammability in conctact with water

The molecular structure of the test substance is such that it does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with water and/or to the evolution of a flammable gas. Moreover the test substance was dissolved in water during the determination of the water solubility (IUCLID point 4.8). It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite spontaneously in contact with water.

In conclusion, lanthanum oxide is considered 'not highly flammable' in contact with water.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In a guideline study according to EU method A.10 Lanthanum oxide was non-flammable. Therefore a classification for flammability is not warranted.
