Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Assuming the substance to behave as an ideal gas is somewhat of a simplification but appears acceptable, as the main information needed is whether the substance is lighter or heavier than air, in accordance with column 2 of REACH (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) Annex VII, the relative density study (required in section 7.4)

Description of key information

The relative density of PMVE is calculated according to the Ideal Gas Laws to be 5.733.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Relative density at 20C:
5.733

Additional information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) Annex VII, the relative density study does not need to be conducted if the substance is gaseous at room temperature. In this case, an estimation based on calculation can be made from its molecular weight and the Ideal Gas Laws.

The relative density of PMVE is calculated according to the Ideal Gas Laws to be 5.733. The calculation is based on the assumption that the substance behaves as an ideal gas. This is obviously a simplification but it is considered acceptable as the main needed information is whether the substance is lighter or heavier than air in order to clarify its tendency to settle or to disperse when discharged at high concentrations into the atmosphere.

Information on the density of the substance was also sourced from the Yaws Handbook of Physical Properties for Hydrocarbons and Chemicals (Electronic Edition), known to contain peer-reviewed data of Klimisch-2 reliability, which reports that PMVE has a liquid density of ca. 1.41 g/cm^3 at 10°C, P = 3728.76 hPa. Information from non peer-reviewed data are also attached however they have not been included in this assessment.
