For assessing the chronic toxicity of Ammonium bicarbonate towards sediment organisms, a long term toxicity test using Hyalella azteca as test organism and ammonium chloride (CAS: 12125 -02 -9) as test substance, was used (Borgmann 1994). H. azteca as a test organism in sediment toxicity tests has several valuable characteristics such as its widespread distribution and common occurrence in freshwater, its ecological importance, ease of culturing and handling during testing, as well as its rapid growth, short life cycle and sensitivity to contaminants (Borgmann et al. 1989). Chronic toxicity tests using H. azteca, usually last 42 days (according to EPA/600/R-94/024). The present study was performed over a total test period of 10 weeks in a static-renewal batch test without sediment, starting with young (0 -1 week old) animals. The inhibition of reproduction was determined. Although the method is not in accordance with OECD or U.S. EPA sediment toxicity tests, this study was considered as reliable endpoint for assessing the chronic toxicity to sediment organisms. An EC10 for reproduction of 3.7 mg/L for ammonium hydrogencarbonate was calculated from NH3 concentrations (value adjusted to pH 8 and 25°C).
