Description of key information

A single key study (Zohravi, 2006) was used to cover this endpoint. This study yielded 28-d NOECs for both mortality and growth of Japanese quails of >= 44 and >= 57 mg La/kg diet when supplying lanthanum as La(CH3COO)3 or LaCl3, respectively. These values correspond to >= 100 and >= 130 mg lanthanum acetate/kg diet.

Additional information

A single reliable study was identified on the toxicity of lanthanum to birds. In this study (Zohravi, 2006), one-day old Japanese quails were exposed to La (added as LaCl3 or La(CH3COO)3) for 4 weeks via their diet (two doses). No significant decrease of growth or increase of mortality was observed during the test compared to the control treatment. The NOECs for both mortality and growth were therefore >= 44 mg La/kg diet for the study with lanthanum acetate and >= 57 mg La/kg diet for the study with lanthanum chloride. When expressed as lanthanum acetate, these NOECs correspond to values of >= 100 mg/kg diet and >= 130 mg/kg diet.
