Additional information

Due the physical nature of hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene and due to the difficulty to test it meaningfully, no experimental aquatic results are available. Instead, QSAR methods have been used to estimate the acute toxicity of the substance to the aquatic organisms. The effect concentrations of hexafluoro-1,3 -butadiene were estimated using ECOSAR (v1.11). The experimental log Kow value of 2.24 was used for the predictions. All acute toxicity calculations are reliable, validated and fall within the applicability domain of the QSARs. The lowest value for freshwater species is calculated in algae (96-h EC50 = 38 mg/l).

Conclusion on classification

According to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 for the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP), results of validated structure activity relationships and expert judgment may also be taken into account where appropriate with regard to classification and labelling of

substances. The aquatic effect concentrations of hexafluoro-1,3 -butadiene estimated using ECOSAR (v1.11) are between 10 and 100 mg/L (toxicity to fish, daphnia and green algae are 81, 41 and 38 mg/L, respectively) and therefore hexafluoro-1,3 -butadiene is to be classified as harmful to the aquatic environment, Category Chronic 3; H412 (Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects).
