Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

1,2-Butadiene is a flammable gas at room temperature and therefore conventional skin and eye irritation studies cannot be carried out. Limited data on its isomer, 1,3-butadiene, indicates that 1,2-butadiene is not irritating to skin or eyes. Based on physical chemical properties, the liquid gas may cause burns and frostbite due to the extreme cold of the liquid.

no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Additional information

In accordance with REACH Annexes VII and VIII column 2 adaptation, studies on skin and eye irritation do not need to be conducted as the substance is flammable in air at room temperature. No skin or eye irritation studies have been conducted with 1,2 -butadiene and there is no indication from other studies in animals that 1,2-butadiene is irritating to the skin. In liquid form it may cause burns and frostbite due to extreme cold..

Limited data are available on the effect of its structural analogue 1,3-butadiene on the eye. Exposure of rabbits and dogs to 6,700ppm (14,824 mg/m3) for 7.5 h/day for 6 days/week for 8 months had no effect on the eyes (Carpenter et al, 1944). Humans exposed to 2000 ppm (4425 mg/m3) and 4000 ppm (8851 mg/m3) 1,3-butadiene described slight smarting of the eyes and difficulty in focusing although at 8000 ppm (17701 mg/m3) no subjective symptoms were reported (Carpenter et al, 1944). The available data therefore indicate that 1,2 -butadiene is not irritating to skin or eyes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

1,2 -Butadiene is a flammable gas at room temperature and therefore inhalation exposure is the only relevant route. 1,2 -Butadiene is non-irritating and does not warrant classification under Dir 67/548/EEC or GHS/CLP.
