Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the study for biodegradation in water and sediment does not need to be conducted since the substance is readily biodegradable.

However, the study of Van Vlaardingen and Van Beelen (1994) serves as supportive information. The study, not following a specific guideline, was ranked “reliable 3” since a blank control was not added and exact sampling time points and pH of the treatments are uncertain. Anaerobic mineralization of acetate in two river Rhine sediments was investigated at 20 °C in sealed bottles and showed a rapid, first order kinetic with DT50 values of ~ 0.5 h (< 2% 14C-acetate left at the test end, total recovery of radioactivity was 90%).
