Sodium and carbonate ions are tolerated by fish at high concentrations
At high concentrations of carbonate, pH may have an impact on fish vitality.

Medium hardness water contains typically 100 mg/l carbonate; a limiting factor to fish health will be raised pH at extremely high concentrations and imbalance of micro-nutrients and other metals.
