Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Three studies on the short-term toxicity of lauric acid to aquatic invertebrates are available.

In the key GLP study (Ministry of the Environment of Japan, 2001) the toxicity to Daphnia magna was tested under semi-static conditions according to OECD 202. After an incubation time of 48 hours the EC50 was determined as 3.6 mg/L (meas. geom. mean). The study by Onitsuka et al (1989) with Hyale plumulosa in saltwater was conducted under static conditions as limit test. The resulting LC50 (48 h) was >1000 mg/L.Curtis et al. (1970) published a test conducted with Artemia salina (brine shrimp) in saltwater. They reported an LC50 of 5 mg/L. However, only a short abstract is available and was thus rated reliabilty 4.

In conclusion, lauric acid shows toxic effects to aquatic invertebrates at 3.6 mg/L, as this is the most sensitive determined EC50..
