Description of key information

The substances of the category, including Isopropyl palmitate, have potential to bioaccumulate due to their physico-chemical properties, but are expected to be metabolised and excreted from fish quickly.

A BCF was calculated to be 913 L/kg wet weight (BCFBAF v3.00, regression based estimate) which indicates that accumulation in organisms is possible. When including biotransformation rate constants the BCF was lower at 31.38 L/kg (Arnot-Gobas estimate, including biotransformation, upper trophic).

If taken up into fish, linear fatty acid ester substances are expected to be rapidly metabolised and excreted. Due to their demonstrated potential for rapid metabolisation in fish, the category of linear aliphatic fatty acid esters has recently been categorised by Environment Canada as having low potential to bioaccumulate (SIDS Expoxidized Oils and Derivatives Category 2006), primarily due to the activity of the enzyme carboxylesterase.
