Preliminary Tests

The DSC-curve of the preliminary test (heating rate of 20 °C/min from 25 °C to 400 °C) is shown in Figure 1. A small endothermic peak started at about 229 °C directly followed by an exothermic peak starting at about 238 °C. After the experiment, the sample had lost about 39% of its mass and a black residue remained.

 

For the interpretation of the endothermic heat effect, a capillary test was carried out in the temperature range between 25°C and 400°C (heating rate 20°C/min). At 195 °C the test item changed its color to yellow/beige, at about 226 °C the test item started swelling and at about 243 °C it was boiling and evaporated. No melting could be observed. At the end a dark brown shiny residue remained.

 

Main Tests

A further DSC run was recorded in the temperature range between 25 °C and 400 °C (heating rate adjusted to 10 °C/min). An exothermic heat effect (decomposition) started at 232 °C. After the experiment, the sample had run out of the sample cup and lost about 43% of its mass.

Conclusions:
The test item did not melt under the conditions of the test. Instead, decomposition of the test item started at 232 °C.
