The influence of the test item Erucamide on the growth of the freshwater green algal species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was investigated in a 72 hour static test according to OECD Guideline 201 (2006), the EU Commission Directive 92/69/EEC, C.3 (1992) and the Commission Regulation (EC) No 761/2009, C.3.

Due to the low solubility of the test item in the algae test medium the organic solvent methanol was used to dose the test item. The nominal concentrations of the test item of 4.6, 10, 22, 46 and 100 µg/L were tested. The highest test concentration of 100 µg/L is clearly above the water solubility limit of the test item.

In conclusion, the test item Erucamide had no biologically relevant inhibitory effects on the algal growth (average growth rate and yield) up to the highest test concentration. Thus, a NOEC (72 h) >= 50 µg/L and an EC50 (72 h) > 50 µg/L were derived based on the mean measured concentrations. The microscopic examination of the algal cells at the end of the test showed no difference between the algae growing at the nominal test concentration of 100 µg/L and the algal cells in the solvent control. The shape and size of the algal cells were obviously not affected by the test item up to at least this concentration.
