Description of key information

Parent compound: In contact with water the substance will hydrolyse rapidly.
Hydrolysis product: Stearic acid is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Parent compound: The half-life of stearoyl chloride was experimentally determined to be below 9.5 hours at pH 4, 7, and 9. (BASF AG, 2006; Report No. 06E02795). Hydrolysis product: Stearic acid: In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be performed if the substance is readily biodegradable or inorganic. Stearoyl chloride hydrolyses rapidly and forms stearic acid and hydrochloric acid. Stearic acid is readily biodegradable, while hydrochloric acid is inorganic.
