Three studies investigating the ready biodegradability of triacetin (CAS 102-76-1) according to OECD guideline 301B (CO2 Evolution Test) are available. In all three studies domestic activated sludge was used as inoculum and two concentrations of the test substance were tested (10 and 20 mg/L). Hales (1993) observed a degradation of triacetin of more than 76% after 29 days. The 10-day-window was reached for both test substance concentrations and therewith the test substance is readily biodegradable. In the two other studies (Coenen (1990) and Bogers (1988)) a degradation of > 60% within 28 days was recorded as well. However, the 10-day-window was not reached for the lower test substance concentration of 10 mg/L and therewith the tests did not fulfil the criteria for ready biodegradability but failing the 10-day window. Thus, triacetin can be regarded as readily biodegradable under test conditions according to OECD criteria.
