Methacrylaldehyde is acutely very toxic to aquatic algae.

Since no test data on the actute toxicity of methacrylaldehyde (CAS 78-85-3) to invertebrates are available a conclusion by analogy approach to acrylaldehyde (CAS 107-02-8) has been applied. In this algae growth inhibition test according to the German National Standard DIN 28692 with the algae Desmodesmus subspicatus an EC50 (72 h) of 0.061 mg/L based on the growth rate was determined. The corresponding NOEC (72 h) was 0.01 mg/L.
