Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Data are available for the explosion limits in air so they have been included here for completeness.
DCPD has an LEL of 0.8% and a UEL of 6.3% volume in air.
However, DCPD is a liquid (commercial DCPD) or a low melting point solid (high purity DCPD) and therefore the flammability is determined on the basis of the flash point, the ability to emit flammable gases upon contact with water and the pyrophoricity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

DCPD is a liquid (commercial DCPD) or low melting point solid (high purity DCPD) and, as such, the flammability classification is based on the flash point in combination with the boiling point. Data are available for the explosion limits in air so they have been included here for completeness. However, there is no information on the temperature at which these results were derived. The CLP guidance applies only to substances which are gases at 20°C and the boiling point of DCPD is 172°C, indicating that at 20°C DCPD is not a gas, therefore derivation of a flammable gas classification based on these explosion limits is not considered to be appropriate.

The Pocket Guide presents key information and data from the US Department of Health and Human Services and as such is a reliable governmental source of information and is considered suitable for this endpoint (NIOSH 2005). The flammability of DCPD has an LEL of 0.8% and a UEL of 6.3%. This is supported by data from the WHO ICSC (2005), which also gives a value of 0.8 -6.3 vol% in air for explosive limits.

DCPD is a liquid (commercial DCPD) or a low melting point solid (high purity DCPD) and therefore the flammability is determined on the basis of the flash point, the ability to emit flammable gases upon contact with water and the pyrophoricity. The molecular structure does not indicate potential reactivity with water or pyrophoric properties and handling of the substance indicates that this is the case. The flash point of DCPD is 32°C which meets the criteria for flammable liquid category 3 (flash point =23°C - =60°C).

Justification for classification or non-classification

DCPD has a harmonised classification as Flammable Liquid Category 2 under CLP. The flash point of DCPD is commercial DCPD is >23°C and high purity DCPD is 32°C, both of which meet the criteria for self-classification as flammable liquid category 3 (flash point =23°C - =60°C).
