Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

Weight of evidence: Experimental results on the substance trichloroacetic acid and read-across from experimental data on the analogue sodium trichloroacetate.

Trichloroacetic acid was evaluated with the Guinea Pig Maximization Test (GPMT). None of the test animal showed any irritating or sensitising symptoms. The test substance resulted to be not sensitising. Results from a non-guideline compliant test (The Mouse Ear Swelling Test, MEST) support the negative results obtained with the Guinea Pig Maximization Test (GPMT) since none of the animals showed any response. The positive controls included in both experiments showed a 100% response.

Based on company data on the analogue sodium trichloroacetate (OECD 406), which is considered to be not sensitising, and applying the read-across approach, the substance trichloroacetic acid is also considered to be not sensitising.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the experimental results, the substance is not classified as skin sensitiser.
