Description of key information

The explosion limits of difluoromethane are reported to be : LEL :13% and UEL:33% volume in air. The substance is thus classified as extremely flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
extremely flammable

Additional information

Two studies were performed according to the ASTM E-681 guideline (GLP status not known but adequate for assessment).

The explosion limits of difluoromethane are found to be 13 -33 % volume in air. Therefore difluoromethane is classified as extremely flammable and is assigned the R12 phrase.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As the lower and upper flammability limits are 13% and 33%, respectively (Dekleva, 1993), difluoromethane has to be classified as extremely flammable (F+, R12 according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC and H220 according to EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/20008).
