Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Justification for type of information:
For details and justification of read-across please refer to the read-across report attached to IUCLID section 13.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across source
Key result
Surface tension:
71.8 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1.07 g/L

The measured surface tension was multiplied by the calibration factor (0.9992), resulting in a corrected surface tension of 71.8 mN/m.

Conclusions:
The surface tension of an aqeous test solution of Sodium (S)-lactate at a concentration of 1.07 g/L at 20 °C was 71.8 mN/m.
Executive summary:

In a GLP study conducted according to OECD 115 and EU Method A.5, the OECD harmonized ring method was used for the determination of the surface tension of Sodium (S)-lactate. The surface tension of a test solution at a concentration of 1.07 g/L was 71.8 mN/m at 20.0 °C. According to this, the test substance is considered not to be surface active (< 60 mN/m).

This information is used in a read-across approach in the assessment of the target substance. For details and justification of read-across please refer to the attached report in section 13 of IUCLID.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material

Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, section 7.6., this study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the test material. But, available data from the enantiomer of the target substance, Sodium (S)-lactate is used by read-across. Sodium (S)-lactate is not surface active, with a surface tension of 71.8 mN/m at 20 °C as shown in a GLP study conducted according to OECD 115 and EU method A.5.
