EC50 aquatic invertebrates: no effects within water solubility

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The acute toxicity to invertebrates was investigated in three studies and one publication.

Two limit tests with Daphnia magna were provided by the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan. The key study was conducted in 2000 with 98.7% pure palmitic acid according to the "Circular on Japanese Test Methods of new chemical substances, daphnia acute toxicity test" and according to GLP. In this static test the EC50 (48h) was found to be >4.8 mg/L. The study conducted in 2006 with > 95% pure palmitic acid was a semi-static test according to OECD 202 and GLP (according to Japanese standards). The EC50 (48h) of >0.25 mg/L supports the results of the key study.

The study conducted by Hooftman (1991) with Daphnia magna showed no toxic effects within the water solubility (EC50 >0.09 mg/L) and the publication from Curtis (1970) with Artemia salina in a semi-static saltwater test showed effects >14 mg/L.

The results show the toxicity of palmitic acid to aquatic invertebrates is limited by its low water solubility (0.04 mg/L at 25 °C). All tests demonstrate no toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility.
