Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 110 (Particle Size Distribution / Fibre Length and Diameter Distributions)
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Determined using a Coulter Counter in accordance with the OECD Guideline 110 Method A Particle Size Distribution. The particle sized was visually determined using a microscope. Orifice tubes were calibrated before and after testing against a Latex standard. A particle size distribution for the spherical diameter of particles was produced by overlapping the average of three tubes digitally using Coulter software. A graph was plotted of Spherical Diameter Vs Percentage Volume over the working range of 700 nm (0.7 microns) to 400 microns. Percentage Volume indicates how many particles within the sample are of a certain size.
GLP compliance:
yes
Type of distribution:
counted distribution

Results and discussion

Particle size
Percentile:
D50
Mean:
> 2 - < 153 µm
Remarks on result:
other: 95.7% within this range. There were no particles measured with a size greater than 153.0 microns. By volume, it’s estimated that 26.0% of the particles have an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10.0 um, but no less than 2.0 microns. (migrated from fields

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The results showed that 5.3% of all particles had a spherical diameter of between 700 and 2036 nm (0.7 - 2.0 micron), with the remaining 95.7% of the distribution having a particle size above this figure, and up to 153 microns.
