A study was conducted to determine the biodegradability of the substance in a sewage treatment simulation test according to OECD Guideline 303A. Under the study conditions, the test substance showed an elimination rate of 80% (average value during the three weeks plateau phase) in the sewage treatment simulation system. The elimination rate peaked at 86% which was observed one day after the start of the dosage of the test substance to the test system. Adsorption of the test substance to the activated sludge was in average 21%. A stripping/volatility of the substance or its metabolites from the aeration vessel or the settling vessel can be excluded.  The elimination was mainly caused by primary biodegradation of the substance to five different degradation products. The formation of CO2 was negligible, indicating that no significant ultimate biodegradation of the substance to CO2 occurred under the test conditions. The substance had no significant adverse effect on the activity of the sludge micro-organisms at the tested concentration of 5 mg/L (Memmert, 2009).

A study was conducted to determine the biodegradability of the substance in marine water according to OECD Guideline 306. Under the study conditions, BIT was not mineralised in seawater at concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L (MacLean, 2005).
