Additional information

Solids

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline UN Test N.1 under GLP conditions. The study was awarded a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the criteria set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).

The powder as supplied was filled into a mould 250 mm long with a triangular cross section of height 10 mm and width 20 mm. After tapping the mould to settle down the powder, it was inverted onto an impervious non-combustible plate of low thermal conductivity. The mould was removed and the ignition source (hot flame (minimum 1000 °C) from a gas burner of minimum diameter of 5 mm flame or hot wire above 1000 °C) was placed at one end of the powder train for 2 minutes or until the powder ignited. If the powder burned a distance of 80 mm, the rate of burning over the next 100 mm was measured. The test was repeated six times using a cool clean plate each time unless a positive result was obtained earlier. The test was conducted at 20 ° C.

From the preliminary screening test the sample was seen to burn in a time > 2 minutes and therefore no further testing is required.

Under the conditions of the preliminary study, the test material was not readily combustible.

Pyrophoric properties

In accordance with Section 1 of Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the testing for pyrophoric properties. Testing does not appear scientifically necessary, as based upon the chemical structure pyrophoric properties are not to be expected; furthermore, experience in use and experience of handling the substance indicates that it does not possess pyrophoric properties.

Substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases

In accordance with Section 1 of Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the testing for substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases. Testing does not appear scientifically necessary as, based upon the chemical structure, water activity is not to be expected; this has been corroborated by the practical handling and use of the chemical over time.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.
