Additional information
Since no reliable short-term test involving aquatic invertebrates is available for C12-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-11-2), in accordance to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5, a read-across to other structurally related category members was conducted. Read-across data from the following substances were used: C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) and C12-14AS TEA (CAS 90583-18-9). Toxicity of alkyl sulfates is dependent on the carbon chain length and the influence of the counter ion can be neglected.
The key, GLP study is available for C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) according to EG Guideline 92/69/EWG (Scholz 1995a). In this study Daphnia magna was exposed in a static system to five concentrations up to 10 mg/L (nominal concentration corresponding to 9.5 mg/L of measured concentration) of C12-14AS Na of 29.8% purity (in water). The 48-hour EC50 value of 4.7 mg a.i./L (nominal concentration) could be determined. Composition of carbon chains of the tested category member C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) is the same as of C12-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-11-2): both contain on average 65% of C12 and 35% of C14 chains. Due to structural and property similarity with the tested category member, the 48-hour EC50 value of 4.7 mg/L is considered as a reliable for C12-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-11-2).
Moreover, one reliable study investigating toxic effects of C12-14AS TEA (CAS 90583-18-9) to Daphnia magna is available. The GLP study was performed according to DIN 38412, part 1, equivalent to OECD 202 (Scholz 1995b). Inhibition of mobility of daphnids caused by the test substance was determined after 24 and 48 of static exposure to test substance up to 10 mg/L (nominal concentrations in agreement with measured concentration). The results showed that the 48-hour EC50 value was 7.1 mg a.i./L (nominal concentration).
