- Endpoint:
- surface tension
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- experimental dates: 29 Nov. 2016
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Remarks:
- The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP, with no deviation. The substance is adequately characterised. Therefore full validation applies.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
- Version / remarks:
- 27 July 1995
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
- Version / remarks:
- Regulation (EC) N°440/2008
- Deviations:
- no

- Type of method:
- plate method
- Key result
- Surface tension:
- 71.78 mN/m
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- Conc.:
- 1 g/L
- Conclusions:
- According to EU A5 criteria, as the result is above the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is considered to have NO surface-active potential under the experimental conditions.
- Executive summary:
The surface tension of the test substance was determined under GLP according to OECD 115/EU A5 guideline, with the plate method.
After check with water as negative control, a series of ten determinations was performed in duplicate on a 1 g/L sample solution, and repeated after a 59 minutes standing period for time-dependency.
Results were repeatable, so the value of 71.78 mN/m, from the first test series, was retained.
Reference
Control
Measured Values Negative Control (HPLC water): 73.01 mN/m at 19.6°C (SD=0.07, n=10)
Literature value for the surface tension of H2O at 19.5 °C: 72.83 mN/m (taken from Vargaftik et al., “International Tables of the Surface Tension of Water”, J. Phys. Chem. Ref.Data 12, 817, 1983).
The surface tension of the negative control was determined with 73.01 mN/m, therefore showing a difference of 0.25% from the stated literature value. The difference lies within the accepted range of 1% deviation from literature value. Therefore, no correction factor for water is deemed necessary.
Test item
The test item solution was held at constant temperature (20.0 ± 0.2 °C). 59 minutes after conclusion of the first measurement series, a second measurement series was performed for verification purposes.
Measured Values Test Item First Series: 71.78 mN/m at 20.0°C (SD=0.05, n=10)
Measured Values Test Item Second Series: 70.36 mN/m at 20.2°C (SD=0.08, n=10)
During the specified period of time, no significant changes in the surface tension were detected. Values ranging from 70.18 mN/m to 71.82 mN/m were recorded showing no significant variations. The values of the single determinations show no significant difference (less than 5 % between mean values of the two measurement series). Therefore, no additional measurement series was required.
Description of key information
According to EU A5 criteria, as the result is above the threshold value of 60 mN/m, the substance is considered to have NO surface-active potential under the experimental conditions.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Surface tension:
- 71.78
- in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
- 1 000
Additional information
A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized OECD/EC method and under GLP, is available. Therefore, it is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key data.
