Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, 2-benzylideneheptanal was observed to be a colorless liquid.
Melting point:
The Freezing point of 2-benzylideneheptanal; CAS No. 122-40-7 was determined with freezing temperature method and it was observed to be less than -8.42 °C at 968.9 hPa.
Boiling Point:
The boiling point determination of Test item 2-benzylideneheptanal (CAS No. 122-40-7 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The mean boiling point was observed to be 287.2°C at 967.7 hPa0.
Density:
The density of test item 2-benzylideneheptanal (CAS No. 122-40-7)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the IS 4730 : 1994 (Reaffirmed 2010) – Method for Determination of Density of Liquids (First Revision) using glass pyknometer. The mean density of test item was observed to be 1.0839 g/cm³ at 20°C and 966.3 hPa.
Particle size distribution:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form (2 -benzylideneheptanal physically appear to be Clear yellow oily liquid.)
Vapour pressure:
Vapour pressure of the 2-benzylideneheptanal is concluded to be less than 0.133 Pa at 20 Deg C.
Partition coefficient:
The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of 2-benzylideneheptanal(CAS No.122-40-7) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals.The reference substances were chosen according to functional similarity with the test substance and calibration graph was prepared . The reference substances were Acetophenone, Benzophenone, Phenol, Benzene, 2,6-Diphenylpyridine, 4-Acetylpyridine, 2-Nitrophenol, Nitrobenzene, Naphthalene having Pow value ranging from 0.5 to 4.9 The Log Pow value was determined to be 2.498 ± 0.003 at 25°C.
Water solubility:
The water solubilitydetermination of test item 2-benzylideneheptanal;CAS No.122-40-7 was doneby spectrophotometric
method. The water solubility was determine to be 181.69 mg/L at 25°C.
Surface tension:
Based on the data from ACD labs, surface tension for 2-benzylideneheptanal was predicted to be 0.0359 N/m.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of 2-benzylideneheptanal (CAS No. 122-40-7)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was observed to be 111.6°C at 967.2hPa.
Auto flammability:
Auto ignition temperature of 2-benzylideneheptanal is determine to be 231 Deg C.
Flammability:
2-benzylideneheptanal does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-benzylideneheptanal is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus 2-benzylideneheptanal was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness:
the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.
Oxidizing properties:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.
pH :
The pH determination of test item 2-benzylideneheptanal (CAS No 122-40-7) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v emulsion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 4.53at 26.8 °C.
Viscosity :
Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of 2 -benzylideneheptanal ( CAS No. 122 -40 -7) at 20 °C and 40 °C is 43.4720 mm²/sec and 34.5800 mm²/s, respectively.
Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of 2 -benzylideneheptanal ( CAS No. 122 -40 -7) at 20 °C and 40°C is 47.1193 mPa.S and 37.4812 mPa.S, respectively.
